Objective: The objective of this lab is to take standalone data and join it so you may use it for mapping purposes. We will take standalone data and join it with an attribute table and then export it as a shapefile that can then be mapped. We will then publish our map to the U.S. Census Bureau's website. Here we will edit the map so it shows exactly what we want other people to see when they look at our map.
Methods:
Part 1.
Task 1. First we must download the data to be used from the U.S. Census Bureau's website, http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml. First we need to select the data set. You will click on advance search and then hit show me all. From here you will expand topics and select, 2010 SFI 100% Data. You will then select State, Counties, and then all counties within state from the geographies tab. You may select any state you want, we will choose the state of Wisconsin. We then select total population from the data and download it, saving it to my designated folder for the lab. The file is saved as a zip file so you must unzip the file. Once unzipped you will open both excel documents and format the DEC_10_SFI_P1_with_ann.csv. This way you will be able to use the data in Arc Map.
Task 3. Now you will open up Arc Map. Set the geoprocessing - environments so that scratch workbook matches the folder you saved the downloaded content. Then add the Wisconsin shapefile to the map and the formatted DEC_10_SFI_P1_with_ann.csv file that you saved to the map. You will then compare the tables to figure out how to join them. Right click on the shapefile of Wisconsin and select join. You will then join it to the DEC_10_SFI_P1_with_ann.csv by GEO_ID column. Once you have joined the table right click on the Wisconsin shapefile in the table of contents and click data - export. You will then export it as a new shapefile that you will be able to map.
Task 4. You will then add the newly created shapefile to the map. Choose the symbology tab and choose quantities and graduated colors. For the value select the new field that was created when the tables were joined.
Task 5. Now we will select a variable of your own choice using the same workflow as before.
Download and unzip a new dataset from the website
Format and save the file so it may be used in Arc Map
Add the files to Arc Map (your new dataset and the Wisconsin shapefile)
Join the two tables to the appropriate columns
Once joined verify they joined correctly and export the data as a new dataset
Add the new dataset to the data fame and edit the symbology so it is appropriate.
Task 6. You will then construct two maps. Insert a title and legend, along with scale and north arrow so the maps are viewer friendly.
Part 2.
Once published you will edit what other people will see when viewing your map. Navigate to http://www.arcgis.com/home and sign into your account. Select your newly created map from my content. Then select view item details. You will now see your map. Now select the content tab and then you select configure pop ups. Make an appropriate title, Then select configure attributes and select which attribute you want to display for other viewers. Change the alias names so they are more appropriate and then save the changes. Then you may share the map to location you desire.
